What is Dental Filling?

Dental fillings restore the health of teeth by repairing cracked, broken, and decayed surfaces. If a patient has decay or a tooth fracture, they may experience pain and sensitivity because of a loss of enamel. Untreated tooth decay may lead to bone loss in the jaw.

Benefits of Dental Fillings in Aurora

Placing dental fillings allows the surface of the tooth to be smoothed out, making chewing and grinding easier. If you’re going to the dentist for a dental filling, it’s important to know what to expect.

Stops the Cavity from Growing

The dentist will remove the decayed part of your tooth when you get a filling. The filling material will then be poured in, sealing up the hole created by the cavity. It prevents the nerve endings in your dentine from being exposed to the temperature of the food you eat and the acids created by your mouth’s bacteria. A cavity exposes these nerves, causing toothaches.

Improves the Structure of the Tooth

Fillings made from composite material can help improve your tooth’s structure.

Strengthens Fractured Teeth

The use of fillings may help to repair a fractured tooth. These are usually white composite fillings. If you are involved in physical activities such as sports or are in an accident, your tooth can become fractured. It is also possible to fracture your teeth when you chew on hard objects such as ice or hard candies.

Improves the Colour of Your Teeth

When teeth are badly stained and discoloured, composite fillings are often used. Stains can occur on your teeth when you consume things like coffee or red wine.

Protects Your Teeth from Decay

You can develop tiny holes on your teeth that are not big enough to be considered cavities, but these holes are prone to trapping food debris and particles. As a result, tooth decay can develop. Composite fillings prevent this from happening.

Tooth Filling Process

Generally, a filling will include the following:

  • In order to numb the area that will be filled, your dentist will use local anesthesia.
  • The decayed area will be removed with a drill or laser. Depending on the extent of the decay, the dentist will select the appropriate instrument.
  • Next, your dentist probes the cavity to see if all the decay has been effectively removed and if any traces of decay or debris remain.
  • A filling is then prepared by cleaning the area.
  • It may be necessary for your dentist to place a liner over the nerve if decay is present near the root of your tooth. Liner materials include glass ionomer and composite resin.
  • Next, layers of tooth-coloured filling are applied.
  • The layers are then hardened by a special light.
  • After your dentist has completed the multiple layering process, the composite material is shaped to the desired shape.
  • The final restoration is polished after any excess material is trimmed off.

Technology and Types of Dental Fillings

Composite Fillings

Plastic and resin materials are used to create composite fillings. With a bright curing light, it is cured inside the tooth while it is still soft. Compared to silver amalgam fillings, it is not as conspicuous because it can be customized to match the colour of a patient’s existing teeth. Composite fillings are not as durable as some other types of fillings.

Ceramic Fillings

Porcelain makes these items both durable and attractive. The cost of ceramic fillings may be higher than composite resin, but they are tooth-coloured and resist stains and abrasion better. Ceramic fillings have the disadvantage of being more brittle, so they must be applied to large cavities to prevent breakage.

Glass Ionomer Fillings

Acrylic and glass are used to make this filling. Children with developing teeth are more likely to have it done. Fluoride is released into the tooth, protecting it from further decay. Although they are stronger than composite resin, they wear out and crack over time because they are weaker. In comparison with composite resin, glass ionomers do not appear natural.

FAQs

While patients report slight discomfort during a filling that happens because of the injection, it is uncommon to experience severe, intolerable pain. If you’re avoiding your dental checkup, over concerns about pain, take a deep breath and don’t be concerned.

Unfortunately, Fillings are not going to last forever. If a filling falls out, see your dentist as soon as possible. Waiting too long to replace the filling can cause tooth decay and more problems, leading to additional cost and pain.

You can typically eat as soon as you leave your dentist’s office. However, your dentist may recommend waiting at least 2 hours before chewing anything hard on the filling if you’re still numb. Eating soft foods for the first two hours would be best.

Good brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits can help you avoid cavities and tooth decay. It would be best if you also took care of your dental work so that fillings can continue protecting vulnerable parts of your teeth.
